One day tour of Lake Maggiore
If you are visiting Milan you can take the opportunity to visit the Lake Maggiore and its beautiful scenery.
The Lake Maggiore is the second largest lake in Northern Italy, it extends to the majority in Italian territory and it also has a part in Switzerland. The Lake Maggiore is located very close to Milan Malpensa airport, and about 70 km away from the city of Milan, it can be a great option for those have just a few free hours at the airport. The main attractions are situated on the west coast, where you can find Stresa, Baveno, Verbania and the Borromee Islands, which attract most of the tourists.
How to get to lake Maggiore
The best way and fastest way to reach and explore Lake Maggiore is by car, but you can also take advantage of the numerous ferry tours available around the lake that will take you to the different islands.

What to see to Lake Maggiore
Coming from Milan or Malpensa Airport, the first city to visit is Arona, a small town that attracts a lot of local tourism especially during the weekends. You can find the 23m high statue of S. Carlo Borromeo bishop of Milan on one of Arona’s hills; you can admire the scenery from the top of the statue, specifically from where its eyes are. S. Carlo has been very important for Catholicism in the north of Italy.
After a fifteen minutes drive from Arona, we will arrive to Stresa, which is the best place where to admire the Borromee Islands from. Stresa is a well known place where tourists like to spend their time between fancy hotels and high street shops.

The Borromee Islands
The Borromee Islands comprehend a group of three Islands called Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori. Isola Bella and Isola Madre belong to the aristocratic family of Borromeo. Both islands have many sites to visit like museums and gardens which are particularly beautiful in Spring.
The third island, called Isola dei Pescatori; tourists mainly visit the island to enjoy the local food which is specialised in fresh fish. The island has a beautiful atmosphere as it still remains as a fishing village. Moving up north, we will find the town of Baveno and then Verbania. Verbania is famous for the beautiful botanic garden of Villa Taranto. Cannobio is another small picturesque village, which is well knows for its small streets and the centre, the City Hall palace from 1291 and Santuario della Pietà.
